Did anyone guess that Georgiana was going to be an Ewok in our Return of the Jedi theme this year? I have to say that she makes the cutest little Ewok ever!!! Grady about died when he saw her. And she is so cozy soft. Perfect for snuggling. I found the perfect fluffy material from Joann’s Fabric Store. Her costume was fairly simple and I am happy to share with you how I made it. It would make the perfect baby or toddler Halloween Costume. Especially if you live somewhere cold and that is a concern for your child. Ever since we moved to Arizona we keep picking themes where we are bundled up. You can see our Frozen Family Costumes Here. At least we chose Return of the Jedi, and not Empire Strikes Back when they are on Hoth.
Best part? She loves it!!! She is so excited to be an Ewok! This girl loves Star Wars and her dad couldn’t be more proud. Darth Vader and Chewbacca are her favorite, but we thought she would make an adorable Ewok. Plus we let her carry around her baby Ewok she got from her Uncle Michael and Joanna when she was born. She loves being a mommy Ewok.
Baby Ewok Costume Tutorial
Fluffy or fuzzy material
Scissors
thread
Sewing machine
Velcro
Onesie used for a pattern
Tuck the sleeves inside your onesie. Use onesie as a pattern cutting at least an inch around the perimeter following the shape of your garment. Cut one piece.
Fold that piece and cut two back pieces. Make sure to leave an extra inch in the middle. (See arrow above) Sew your two back pieces together up the center, right sides together. Stop sewing 3-4 inches before you get to the top. Lay your back piece down with the right side up. Lay your front piece (The piece you first cut) down over it right side down. Sew together where the shoulders are along with the sides and crotch area. Be sure to leave holes where arms and legs go.
Measure your sleeve hole to figure out your width for your sleeve. Also measure their arm to find the length. Cut two large rectangles and sew together with right sides together. Repeat the same steps with your legs. When it comes time to sew your sleeves and pant legs to your garment make sure to place your seam side down.
Turn your body piece inside out. Place your sleeve right side out into the body as shown above. Sew pieces together. Repeat for all legs and arms. Remember to be mindful of your seams.
Doesn’t that look lovely? Sew ribbons onto the body piece back where you left a slit. That way you can tie it together to keep the back closed.
The hood is really simple. I make these kind all the time. You might spot some when I posted our Past Halloween Costumes here. Use a jacket hood for a pattern. Cut on a fold to cut two pieces. Remember when you trace your hood to leave at least an inch around for your seam allowance. And nice for these styles to be a bit bigger. Also leave a tab to fold over under your child’s chin. See picture below. Sew along the seam to connect your two pieces. I went ahead and cut another two so I could line my hood making it cozy inside as well.
In the picture above I have the two tabbed pieces and the two lined pieces stacked. Cut out four ears as well. Sew two ears together with right sides together and turn right side out. Fold in sides of the bottom of the ear to great a great shape. Repeat with other ear. On your outer hood piece snip a hole where you can slide in your ears. Sew your ears in place making sure to sew up all of the hole you created.
Doesn’t it look adorable already? Try it on your child and sigh with delight. Now sew the seam for the lining of your hood. Then sew the edge of the hood and lining together. Tuck the lining inside your hood. You can either sew on a button and snip a small hole to connect the tabs or sew on velcro. The tabs wrap around the chin. Measure where it lays on your child before adding Velcro.
For the piece of cloth around the Ewok I used an old sheet. Cut a rectangle. Fold it in half and at the fold cut on the fold line an inch or so. I then put it on the hood to see if it lays nicely around the ears. once it’s around the ears hand sew the pieces back together until you reach the neck area. The stitching can look homemade. Remember Ewoks supposedly sew these pieces of cloth. Cut a hole in the front so your child can see out of their costume. I recommend cutting the hole while they aren’t wearing it. Feel free to angle the front or back fabric to make it look authentic.
We used a little make up pencil to create her nose. Isn’t that the sweetest Ewok ever??? My older boys couldn’t get over how cute she looked. And if you need an Ewok costume but don’t have time to make one you could find one here on amazon.
