Isn’t it possible to ever celebrate too many things in life? I sure hope not. July 31 is a special day in our family. It’s Harry Potter’s Birthday. It started with pinning all these great Harry Potter recipes for the someday party we would throw. I decided each of my kids would have a Harry Potter party when they turned 11. (That’s the age wizard’s start at Hogwarts) And it didn’t matter if they didn’t like Harry Potter (so far that won’t be a problem) they better get on board! (Preferably on the Hogwarts Express) But I didn’t want to wait all the time to try out these recipes so we invited our friends over to play Harry Potter Clue and have some Butterbeer cupcakes with us. We had a great time together. Since then we have continued celebrating Harry on his special day.
This year I thought it would be extra fun to make Harry Potter shirts. My favorite part about this is having everyone’s style and personality come out when they picked their sayings or design. I loved seeing what each child picked for their shirt. Draco was the perfect child to have the Death Mark on his shirt. And it had to be green to coordinate with Slytherin’s house color. We picked up these shirts at Walmart for a couple of dollars each. That is one of the things I love about my Silhouette. You can make ordinary things really fun with a little creativity.
HARRY POTTER T-SHIRT TUTORIAL
Start with your Cameo, or any other machine from Silhouette. Design your image. There is a lot of great and free clip art available or you can design your own image. Make sure to reverse your image. Cut a piece of your Heat Transfer Material and attach it to your cutting mat.
Place the shiny side down. Once it is cut, trim the excess to save. Use your hook and remove the extra parts until you just have your image on the clear plastic piece. Place it on your shirt, bag or whatever else you want to make.
Then place a towel over your design. Hold down your iron for 45-60 seconds. Peel back your plastic. If your image isn’t on your shirt enough, repeat until it’s on your shirt. Show it to your child and wait for them to squeal.
Don’t my little Harry Potter Fans look adorable??? Georgiana’s shirt says “Or worse Expelled”. It’s one of my favorite lines from Hermonie. Gandalf just finished reading the last book last night. He LOVED it! He read the first three when he was younger, but I wanted him to wait until he was a little bit older for the rest of them. He read each book in a day or two. Can’t wait for him to get his Hogwarts letter next spring. When his best friend’s older brother turned 11 (he is also a big HP fan) I sent him a letter from Hogwarts. I heard it made it his day! And Gandalf’s best bud, who was five at the time, may have cried that he didn’t get one too. These are fun traditions we have to increase our love for these great books and encourage reading in our family.
These are probably my favorite cupcakes of all time. Butterbeer Cupcakes are seriously delicious! I haven’t made them into call ball snitches YET. Draco is still reading the third book right now. And Gandalf can’t wait for him to finish the series. But it’s hard to keep up with that kid on reading. It’s one of his talents. Right now Draco is loving the Dark Lord Funk parody I showed him last week. He is learning the dance. And if we listen to it in the car and it ends Georgiana chants Voldermont until I play it again.
Our plan for Harry’s Birthday are:
Going to school in our new shirts
Heading to the Library for a Harry Potter scavenger hunt (When in doubt, go to the library)
Making Kreacher’s French Onion Soup for dinner
Eating Butterbeer Cupcakes
And as mentioned in our Summer of Ice Cream posts, eating ButterBeer Ice Cream
And playing Harry Potter Clue. Our new family favorite game. (I can’t believe how much this version of Clue is right now? I pretty sure it wasn’t that much when we got it)
What is your family doing for Harry’s Birthday? Watching a movie or making Butterbeer? Be sure to share your ideas!!!
Merry Happy Returns Harry!
