Super excited to share some book themed party ideas! It’s a great way to get your kids excited about reading. And I think it helps make stories come to life. Personally I love themed parties!!! Really, I love any kind of party. But when I spend time (serving is my love language) putting together, let’s say my son’s Percy Jackson Party, I love hearing my kids talk about the book and crack up together. And I am sure that when my 5 year old is reading chapter books he is going to want to read Percy Jackson. Bonus: I get to re-read them. Spending time focusing on the details of a book we read together is time well spent. I love hearing their favorite parts or the insights they come up with. And talking about literature helps me as a parent draw parallels to a principal that I can use as a teaching moment. I love asking my kids their ideas for their parties now that they are getting older. I’m not going to lie, they have some really great ideas.
So here are some fun book themed party ideas…
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus Party
This was our most recent party. Super easy and fun! We had hot dogs and cake. We had fun activities. And I read one of the books and introduced some of the kids to the hilarious pigeon who crack us up.
Love this colorful party. You could pick your favorite Dr. Seuss Book or celebrate them all. Lots of fun food ideas! And I love how so many of Dr. Seuss’ books have morals or lessons. Catch my party always has tons of great ideas.
Alice is a classic. And even though most children have only read Disney’s version of Lewis Carroll’s book, it still makes for a great party. I have seen parties all about the Queen of Heart or maybe the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. I love this crazy book and all the fun ideas that come from it. I used the party above from Kara’s Party Ideas for inspiration when I was planning Little Miss’ 1st Birthday. (first blog post ever!)
Georgiana’s 2nd birthday was based off another book. I just adore the Lady Bug Girl books. I love that she says that she can do anything. And when you plan a themed party for a two year old, I’ve found, they get so excited about the theme. She still plays Lady Bug girl almost daily. And her big brother (also a fan of the books) likes to pretend to be Bingo, her dog. Super easy theme and easy on the budget. As far as activities, like Lady Bug Girl, can do anything….
Such a cute theme for a 1st birthday. And so many healthy food options! I love this party, the colors are so fun! There are so many great new books out but I like to make sure my kids get to read some of the classics too.
This party is over the top amazing!!! I totally want to throw a Madeline party someday. But the girls need to be old enough to keep their little blue capes on them for a picture. You will want to click over and see all her pictures. Seriously so adorable. And I love books that take place in other countries because of the great opportunities to teach them about other places.
I just love this party!!! I ended up throwing Yoda a Peter Pan party when he turned 3. My kids love Peter Pan. And I love the colors, wood elements, and red feathers! Such a fun theme! You can add mermaids, pirates, fairies, and so much more. I love seeing parties focused on Tinkerbell or Captain Hook. Neverland is a fun idea. It’s fun being a kid and refusing to grow up.
Technically Calvin and Hobbes is a comic book. But it still encourages reading! My kids love Calvin and Hobbes! It was a great party and one of my most popular pins. Tragically not a lot of kids know about the gems of knowledge given from Calvin. It was fun introducing Draco’s class mates to something he loves. And who doesn’t love a party with paper hats and water balloons.
I’ve already decided. Every child of mine will get a Harry Potter Party when they turn 11. Luckily they are all on board (Hogwarts Express) and love the boy who lived. The best part for this party is going to be the food. Honeydukes has some pretty amazing treats. There are so many great treasures in Harry Potter’s world that would make for a fun party! Already planning my oldest son’s party now. This party link above looks amazing!
We had a mother/daughter activity at my church that was Mary Poppins themed and it was the cutest thing ever! I still remember the adorable carousel cake. So many fun ideas! The party above is really adorable! Her cookie making skills are so impressive. You will want to check out the rest of her great ideas!
I really enjoyed listening to Percy Jackson as a family. When my son asked for a Percy Jackson Party I knew reading the books was going to be the best way to research ideas. It was a really fun party. And I was really happy with how his cake turned out. Decorating cakes is not my strength. (Though I really liked making the Calvin and Hobbes one too) Even though not all of the boys had read the books most of them had seen the movies.
Hardy Boys Birthday Party
I wanted to share one last book themed party idea. I threw this party back in 2013 before I was blogging. It’s one of my favorite. I need to write a post about it. Gandalf was loving the Hardy Boys books. So we decided to throw a mystery party. It turned out so great! And Gandalf ended up solving the mystery, which was an added bonus. And I was really happy with how the invite pictures turned out. I love recreating the cover of their first book. Draco was a natural when it came to posing.
These party themes are a great way to get your kid on board for reading. Don’t know which one to pick? What book makes them happy? What book do they want over and over again? Or if they are older and you are trying to ignite the excitement of reading pick a popular book and let them know you can watch the movie when you finish reading it to them. I really love the overdrive app. Your kids can listen to audio books while they play legos or puzzles. Some kids listen better when they are active. It’s great for me when I have a lot to do but I’m trying to avoid screen time. Or we listen to books while we are driving. Be sure to take breaks and talk about what is happening.
Thanks for reading this post! I would love to hear which party is your favorite. Or what book you want to have for your party.
