I am so super excited to share my DIY 3 Broomsticks Mug Tutorial with you today. And even more excited to be part of Rae Gun Ramblings Harry Potter Series. I first found her blog when I saw a pin for this adorable number years ago! In the past I have poured over the Harry Potter Series, loving every idea. So I am super excited to be part of it this year!!!
My oldest born child turned 11 last spring which is exciting news indeed! We were finally able to throw a Harry Potter Birthday Party. I was really happy how things turned out, especially with moving the month before. One of my favorite party details were these 3 Broomsticks mugs. Butterbeer is pretty much the most exciting treat in the Harry Potter Series. I mean Firewhisky sounds cool too. But I always got the idea it was an adult beverage. I would have loved to have Fred or George sneak me a mug of Butterbeer. I knew this special treat needed a special mug. It’s always rewarding to see something in your head turn out perfectly.
So after my son and his friends played Quidditch we invited everyone in for a round of Butterbeer. These mugs were so easy to make! And because I picked them up at the Dollar Tree they make for a good investment. I was able to make 18 of these bad boys, so the next time one of my kids turns 11 we already have these mugs ready to go.
But they aren’t just for Harry Potter Parties! We love using them for root beer floats, smoothies, shakes, or everyday drinking. My hubby especially loves the size of them. And of course we plan on using them for Harry’s Birthday this year. In case you are from a muggle household (and we don’t mind if you are) Harry Potter’s birthday is July 31st. And our family likes to celebrate with wearing our favorite Harry Potter shirts, eating treats, and playing Harry Potter Clue or watching a movie. My second son swears Harry is real. My older son, who is all about facts and logic, told him it wasn’t possible. My second son whom we call Draco, replied, “Then why does mom celebrate his birthday?” You got to love his logic.

- Dollar Store Mugs
- Vinyl (I love Expressions Vinyl)
- Etching Cream
- Craft stick
- Gloves

- Design for your Silhouette (Free Download below)

First you are going to want to cut your design on vinyl and weed out the brooms and letters. I recommend following the directions and warning on the etching cream. I wiped down my mugs with a rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. Then I placed a piece of painters tape to help me keep my design application straight.
Apply your vinyl stencil to your mug. Be sure to apply is straight and in the same location if you are making more than one mug. Smooth out your vinyl so you don’t have any bubbles.
I liked doing several at a time. While wearing gloves apply the etching cream to your glass. Be careful because it will burn. I had my mugs process for the maximum time. I also reapplied cream half way through and stirred around the cream I had to make sure it was being evenly applied. Rinse your mugs and remove your stencil and marvel at how amazing they look! It’s just like magic!

This drink is perfect for your Harry Potter party or when you finally finish one of the books with your kids. Speaking of books, have you preordered the new Harry Potter and the Cursed Child yet? Or the new Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: The Illustrated Edition (available October 4th)? We have the first Illustrated book and it’s stunning. We are reading it with our third boy right now! I love the giggles that happen when we read about Fred and George.
