I was more than willing to make this DIY Minnie Mouse Smash Cake for my girlfriend’s baby girl. But how is it possible that she could be turning 1??? It just seems like yesterday I was throwing her “Mint to Be” baby shower. Her little girl is getting so big. And I think I won her over with this cake. Usually I see her when I’m doing her mom’s hair and she doesn’t quite appreciate hair appointments just yet. And this cake is pretty simple and I am more than happy to help you out and show you how I was able to put it together.
I love that her Minnie Mouse Party had the feminine colors of pink, white, and gold. My friend wanted her Smash Cake to look like a giant cupcake. And then she found this oversized mug that was PERFECT! I just used a boxed cake, but only half of the batter. Look at how cute it looks when you take it out of the pan. I think I might use this next time I have a 1 year old party. Remember after you bake your cake you want to wrap it in saran wrap and freeze it for at least 24 hours. I pulled it out and made some homemade frosting. Go ahead and frost at least the bottom section.
Now it’s time to use your fondant. I love this easy recipe from How Does She. It’s marshmallow fondant and it tastes great. But if you are in a pinch you can buy some pre made fondant. The awesome scrapping tool below is from the Dollar Tree and I seriously love it! (In case you don’t have a Dollar Tree you can order it here) The ruler on it is super handy. But I really love how it cuts fondant. Use the ruler and figure out what size you need your cup cake liner to be. My girlfriend wanted the liner to be pink. I love using these gel colors from Wilton to get the colors I want. Once you have the color and size you can wrap it around, smoothing as you go. I touched it up and smoothed out parts after dipping my fingers in water. You could make indents or designs on the bottom if you would like. I made sure to keep the crease in the back when I added my ears so you couldn’t see it.
To make the ears I used white fondant and a small cup to get the perfect measurements. Feel free to look in your pantry for the perfect circle size. For my son’s Gameboy Cake I used sprinkle lids to make the buttons. Ideally I would let my ears dry out overnight. But we ended up seeing a later showing of Wonder Woman and it just didn’t happen. But I found this blog that shared a little secret on how to harden your fondant without tylose. Total lifesaver! Then I sprayed the ears gold with this shimmer spray. I did two coats on each side.
To make the bow my friend got this cute bow cookie cutter. I then used my scrapper tool to cut a rectangle to wrap around the middle. Super easy. I followed the tutorial here to create the roses. I got my frosting bag all ready to go only to realize I needed my larger cake decorating tip. As I moved the frosting to another bag I think I got some air in my bag which made the last part of my flower not as full. So try not to do that and I promise it will be easier. When I fill a bag with frosting I usually place it in a large cup and then pull down the side around the cup so I can get the frosting as close to the decorating tip as possible. Once you have your flowers on your cake on you can add your ears and bow. And there you have it! An adorable Minnie Mouse Smash Cake, though not perfect. I love making cakes and trying new things. And even if it’s not perfect I am going to guess the birthday kid or baby in this case will still LOVE it!
And what’s not to love? Who doesn’t want a Minnie Mouse Party? And watching babies eat their first cake is seriously one of my favorite things!!! I was so happy I was able to help out my friend by making this for her. You can find my other cake creations if you search through my birthday party ideas. And don’t forget to pop over and read about her baby shower. The cake story in that post is unforgettable.
If you do make this cake tag me on Instagram so I can see how it turned out. Happy Baking!!!
