These DIY Radish Earrings are a total must if you are putting together a Luna Lovegood costume. And who wouldn’t want to be Luna? I love that J.K. Rowling has so many strong female leads in Harry Potter. Currently Georgiana and I are reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Illustrated edition) together right now. Although Ginny is her favorite character right now, I know once she starts to get to know Hermonie and Luna, it’s going to be a tough call. I think she loves Ginny because her dad gave her that nickname.
But her blonde hair and independent spirit makes her a great Luna. And what mother doesn’t want to raise a Luna? I just love Luna’s strong sense of self and commitment to her principals. I hope that my daughter can grow up, marching to the beat of her own drum. I hope she can be herself and to not compromise for anything. And that she can be brilliant, loyal, and kind. Being a little weird myself I can totally relate to Luna.
And dressing up as characters from books is a great way to encourage a love for reading in your home. Harry Potter has a special place in our hearts. We love to celebrate Harry’s birthday and September 1st when the Hogwarts Express leaves. Little traditions like this keep our family connected and help foster a love for reading. These radish earrings are so easy to make. It would make a great kid’s craft. And I intentionally make them for clip on earrings so young children could enjoy them.
I swear she looks so much older this month! She’s going to be reading chapter books before I know it!
DIY Radish Earrings Tutorial
Supplies needed:
- Clip on Earrings Hardware
- little wooden hearts
- green hemp (similar here)
- pink and white paint
- glue gun
- green felt
- scissors
- Paint your hearts completely pink. Then paint the bottom white. Using a wet brush blend some more white paint to blur your line. Reapply as necessary.
- Loop your hemp to create about three loops on each end. Mine was about 6 inches. You can vary with your inches, just make sure you do the same length for both ears. Tie a knot in the middle like shown in the picture. Cut the ends to create the leaves.
- Cut a small piece of green felt to cover the earring. Attach with glue.
- Fold your hemp in half and glue your knot to the back of your radish heart.
- Glue your “leaves” to the green felt, making sure to attach all the stalks to the clip.
- Let dry and enjoy!
Doesn’t she make the cutest little Luna? My oldest son, who has read the whole series, was cracking up when he saw her. Also you are going to want to grab some glasses to complete the look! The official ones are here. I found these gold ones in my mom’s garage last month. I do think yellow looks great on her! The rest of the outfit was easy to put together. I let her pick a wand leftover from my son’s Harry Potter Party last year. It looked darling tucked behind her ear. (Does anyone else have random wands around their house?)
And I did put in her extensions I made for her last Halloween. Perks of having a hairdresser mom. You will want to use this wave iron to get her look. This costume is darling adorable and so easy to throw together. I had so much fun snapping away with our photo shoot. So much easier than when she was younger and I dressed her up as Hermonie.
