Our family is SO EXCITED about participating in #LighttheWorld campaign. If you haven’t heard of Light The World you are going to want to keep reading. December is a time for my family to pause and remember the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Christmas can sometimes be stressful, commercialized, and based on receiving gifts. The Light the World initiative is designed to share light with others and focus on giving as He gave. It helps put Christ back into Christmas.
But you don’t have to be Christian to participate. I know my Jewish friends are all about sharing light this time of year as they celebrate the miracle continued light. We as a world can lighten the load of others and share light together. Everyone is invited to help Light The World.
Last year we participated with 25 ways to follow Christ to help Light the World. Everyday had a prompt and we looked for ways to follow Jesus Christ and serve as he would serve. This year they are changing it up. Instead of 25 days and 25 ways to serve we can work towards weekly ways to Light the World. It starts with December 1st being a day of worldwide service. You can click over to JustServe.org to find ways to serve with your family.
Then each week will have different ways we can Light the World. It’s starts with Light the World, Light Your Community, Light Your Family, and ends with Light Your Faith. Whether you do something everyday OR something each week you can spread your family’s light as you work together.
I know what some of you might be thinking….another thing to do during Christmas?
But I promise it’s worth it!
Last year I noticed a big change in my family. Especially my kids. Christmastime sometimes can be filled with parties and busyness, and the increased desire for wants! Kids are sent catalogs and commercials insisting your kids need stuff. But that’s not what I really want this time of year to be about.
You can grab this free printable above! You will also find two free service cards with this bundle as a special sneak peek. More service cards will be shared soon.
When we spent time watching quick videos and shifting our focus on serving others an increased amount of peace and joy entered into our home. The “worldly” things seemed to not matter and instead my kids were sharing things they had done and how it made them feel. Our home had more peace and love. And our testimonies were strengthened. We grew closer together and closer to our Savior Jesus Christ.
And the best way to get the kids on board is to have a family meeting (I recommend treats) and share ideas on how we can light the world. Be sure to listen to your kids ideas and figure out how your family can serve others. We want our kids to buy in and we as parents can support their ideas.
As our family was coming up with ways to serve and help light the world in our family meeting. We were so excited to share some exciting news!!! Last year you may have seen an amazing Giving Machines in Salt Lake City. If not , click on over and watch their video. Such a creative way to give. This year they are going to have 5 giving machines!!! And one of them is going to be in our hometown of Gilbert Arizona! My kids really want to buy goats for families in other countries. Our kids are so excited to help families around the world. I love that we can bring light to people around the world from our little town here in Arizona.
But because we wanted our kids to feel the joy of really giving we knew we should have a way for them to help earn money towards this great cause. Sacrificing time and working towards a goal will help our kids feel love towards those they can help. We decided we would host a bake sale in our neighborhood for the first family night in December. We would sell cookies and hot cocoa and donate the funds we earn to help our brothers and sisters around the world.
My amazing friend Anna let us borrow her lemonade stand. Her husband made this a couple of years ago, isn’t it adorable? Our families are going to join forces and sell baked goods together. And Anna was a gem helping me move this stand down several streets so I could take these pictures. We both agreed to have his hubby bring it over with his truck the night of our bake sale. I love when other families and friends can join forces. It adds more light.
And I wanted to share this idea with YOU! Your family can hold it’s own bake sale and help light the world! I have these free printables available for you to make it even easier! And I’ll even share my favorite sugar cookie recipe with you. You can work together with your family to make some yummy treats. And then just have your kids manage the bake sale. It’s going to be a great experience for them. And if you don’t live near one of the amazing vending machines (Salt Lake, New York, London, Arizona, or the Philippines) you can help Light the World by donating to Operation Underground Railroad and help rescue kids from human trafficking.
It may seem like a small thing or you may only earn a small amount, but I know it will make a world of difference to the people we can help. And our families will be blessed with more true joy as we strive to serve others.
