It’s the best day of the year!
I’ve been waiting forever for Treat Yo’ Self 2017! Don’t know what’s happening? Then read the cake.
Parks & Rec characters Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford are all about treating themselves. It’s a day devoted to luxury and pamper. The best clip to show you is when Tom and Donna take Ben with them on their Treat Yo Self adventure. Getting things that are practical are not what this new holiday is about.
And what do we treat ourselves to?
- Clothes
- Fragrances
- Massages
- Mimosas
- Fine Leather Goods
And I seriously wish I had the funds to celebrate this holiday all out! But being a mostly stay at home mom my budget is a little smaller. That being said self care is an important thing. I love being a mom. It’s what I’ve always wanted. Seriously the best job ever. But it’s draining and emotional exhausting. Also it’s constant. All. The. Time. Which is great, but also hard. As mothers, or really as women in general, we should set time aside to refill our tanks and connect with ourselves. I’m not just a mother. I have my own hobbies and goals. And I want my children to know I cherish being a mother, but my identity is more than being their mom.
So taking time for date nights, girls nights, and time for ourselves is important. I have a list of 10 things we can do as mothers to Treat Our Selves. October 13th is the day the Treat Yo Self episode first aired. I also have a free printable, courtesy of the talented Kelly the Hobbyist, available to my readers to help you celebrate the best day of the year. Because sometimes we need a reminder to Treat Yo Self.

10 Ways for Moms to Celebrate Treat Yo Self

Take a Nap
I am always a better person when I have more sleep. Whether you want to go to bed early or take a nap, catching up on some extra sleep will make you feel better. Maybe you need to do it when your own kids are sleeping. Or maybe you will let your kids watch a movie and you can sneak off for a quick siesta. But feel free to give yourself some time to catch up some much needed rest.
2. Get Your Hair Styled
Sure. You could do it yourself. But isn’t it lovely having someone else wash and blow dry your hair? I love that blow dry bars are popping up all over. Treat your self to a fabulous style while you read something with no educational value. You’ll look great and I’m pretty sure you’ll feel better too. And if you visit an Aveda salon make sure to sample some Hand Relief, the best hand cream ever.
3. Literally Treat Yo Self
Recently I had the most amazing Carmelita from Rise Up Bakery here in the East Valley. It was so delicious. Take time to grab a little treat whether it’s some cheesecake or gelato. Pick up a little something just for you that you don’t have to share.
4. Call a Friend
Better yet, stop by and visit with one. I have so many amazing women in my life. And we are all seriously busy. But I love when I have a chance to catch up with a friend. Talking to my girlfriends is such a life saver. They get it. They are in the trenches with me. Some of them are even further in trenches and I really appreciate their input. Ask them what’s happening in their lives. Talk about movies or books you’ve loved lately. Or where you want to go on your next vacation.
5. Do something for you
Something that I’ve always wanted to do for myself was work on hand lettering. My amazingly talented friend Kelly The Hobbyist was sweet enough to share this gorgeous printable with my readers. I recently bought some markers because I’ve been wanting to work on this talent. It sound relaxing and therapeutic. And Kelly has these awesome pages to help you get started. And did I mention they are free? Make sure you thank Kelly in the comments for sharing her talent. I’ve determined to take time for myself and work on a talent. And I think it’s great for my kids to see me doing things for myself. So think about what you want to do. Dance class? Piano lessons? Pedicure? Hand lettering?
6. Pick Up Dinner
I seriously love the option of picking up dinner on the way home. Treat your self by picking up your favorite dinner and give yourself a night off from cooking. There are so restaurants have curb side assistance for picking something up quickly. It doesn’t have to be pizza or fast food. I love meal planning and family dinner, but I think I deserve a night to Treat my self to not cooking.
7. Read a Book
One of my favorite things to do for myself is take time to read. If I’m being honest, this is great for my kids too. Even if I read for long periods at a time, I am teaching them that reading is important all throughout your life. I read to learn and to enjoy myself. And if I can read in a hot bath, all the better. I’ve been eyeing A Man Called Ove and Bossypants for months. (Although honestly my older son kept telling me I had to read Heroes of Olympus. So I read books 1-3 in like 4 days. I’m waiting to start book 4 because I really need to start sewing for Halloween and if I start I won’t put it down to work) Grab your favorite book or pick up a new book and take time for yourself.
8. Put on a Facial
If you can actually escape to the spa for a massage or facial mad props to you. But even just putting on a face mask is a big favor to your skin. We need to take care of our bodies and that means taking time care for ourselves. Really we shouldn’t wait for October 13th to take care of ourselves. Especially our skin. But try to carve out time to Treat Yo Self. Face masks make my skin feel great and it doesn’t take much time.
9. Exercise
I always feel better when I take care of my self which includes exercise. I have a lot of friends who love to run, attend High Fitness classes, Barrel, or Cross Fit. Honestly I love stretching and doing some basic yoga. Take some time to go for a hike or swim. Your body will thank you.
10. Serve Someone
And speaking of feeling better, the best way to brighten your day is to serve others. If you need ideas I suggest picking up an extra treat and using the cute tags I’m sharing today (or stickers if you print them on these labels) and visiting someone you love. This idea combines suggestions 3, 4, and 10. We can serve in a small way by bringing by a treat. Or we can find a great cause at JustServe.org. Simpy add your zip code to find service opportunities near you. I promise you’ll feel great after you reach out to help someone else.
Treat yo self is a great chance to see how we are doing in the area of self care. I know some women really have a hard time making time for themselves. I would invite you to think of the example you are giving your children. Is mom’s purpose to run around doing everything for everyone? I don’t want my sons to expect that when they become husbands or for my daughter to have that expectation of herself.
I know I’m a better wife and mother when I take time out to nourish my body and soul. Scripture study really helps feed my spirit. I would love to hear what you love to do to treat yo self. And if you haven’t been watching Parks & Rec, I would make it happen. You can also find other Parks & Rec posts below. And leave a comment below how you love to treat yo self. I hope you enjoy your printable and sticker download. You deserve it! And don’t forget to pin this post. And be sure to follow @KellyTheHobbyist on Instagram for more inspiration. Thanks!
