This adorable DIY Poe Dameron costume really shows what a heartthrob this boy is going to be someday. He was so excited to be Poe from The Last Jedi. Can’t blame him. Poe is their best pilot. And his jacket is really cool. But the detail my son ended up loving the most was his gun holster. Pretty much this is a great costume for any boy. And the best part? You might already have parts of the costume at home.
Future Heart Throb!
Hopefully you have some brown pants already. If not, head to your local Goodwill. I picked up these pants for about $5. And honestly we had everything else on hand. Granted I have bins of material and lots of craft supplies.
To make his gun holster I used leftover material from our Harry Potter Sorting Hat from my son’s Harry Potter Party. The leather originally came from a leather jacket I got from the Goodwill. You don’t need much for this costume. Just make sure to have your gun so you have your measurements. It’s the same gun from when my son was Han Solo. We’ve had this blaster for about 12 years. We just spray painted a nerf gun. Chances are you have one. If not you can grab one here.
I cut a piece of leather in an upside down T. The bottom section was sewn together just enough so the gun could be pulled easily out. If you are sewing with your sewing machine make sure you pick up a leather sewing needle.
Then I tucked long vertical piece around my son’s belt and stitched it in place. This way I can thread my son’t belt through the holster. Next I cut two skinny pieces to act as the strap. You will also need some D rings to use to hold them together. The leather is easy to work with. Remember it doesn’t have to be perfect. We have a rebellion going on right now. We don’t have time for perfect seams.
The shirt was a little tricky. Essentially it’s two front pieces that overlap with a collar. I used muslin I had on hand. And I didn’t bother with sleeves since he really loves his jacket. I cut the pieces below using one of his T-shirts as a guide. Remember you want each front piece to be about 2/3 the width of the shirt so they can overlap. I added those weird long pieces so I could wrap them around and try to make a collar. The arrow shows about where I made the cut for my collar. This would be done on both sides. Hem the shirt so the center front isn’t fraying.
Sew the front pieces to the back on the sides leaving a section for your armholes. Cut according to the arrow so you can wrap this piece around your kid’s neck. Stitch together at the shoulders. I just wrapped the collar pieces and sewed them together. It wasn’t perfect I just want them to stand up. Then I stitched my front pieces down to create the collar. I really wish I was better at making shirts.
You may just want to pick up a church shirt from the Goodwill and use some Rit Dye so it isn’t so white. Or keep it white as your kid may not notice the difference from white and cream. 😉
If you keep scrolling you can see my shirt isn’t perfect. But it works just fine. I added some snaps so it will stay closed. You can just sew them one. Super easy.
We already had a leather jacket in our dress up box. But we needed a cool patch to let everyone know he’s part of the rebellion. I just cut out the rebel symbol from red felt and attached it to some cream felt. (Yay for glue guns) To attach it to our jacket I used patch thread. It’s so easy and doesn’t show up. Also I like using this thread for hanging up things for parties.
It really makes the costume!
