My boys love to dress up! Especially my younger two. When Draco was a toddler he was always in a costume. And in character. I loved it!!! And even though I love seeing them dressed up as Jedi or Superheroes, I loved it even more when they dressed up as Harry Potter or Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. Dressing up is a great way to get kids excited about reading. Yesterday I shared some of my favorite heroine costumes, but today it’s all about the boy. So here are some of my favorite boy costumes from books. Because, you know, it’s Dr. Seuss’s birthday today!
Favorite Boy Literary Characters
Okay this costume is seriously the cutest!!!! How adorable and cozy can you get? Love, Love, Love this costume. My kids are big fans of Narnia.
The Day the Crayons Quit by The House that Lars Built
Another great costume from this blog! So much talent! I love following The House That Lars Built on Instagram. And this costume isn’t just for boys, but I wanted to share it anyways. My sons roll with laughter whenever we read it. I think the peach crayon is their favorite.
Kids make the cutest hobbits!!! I love this adorable costume idea! Last Halloween we were debating between Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Such a fun idea. I think my boys need some Hobbit robes in their dress up box.
Update! Since this post we have done Lord of the Rings as a family. You can also find a Frodo costume here.
Ashley, from Make it and Love it, is the Costume Queen! I die every year when I see her adorable coordinating costumes. She is seriously talented. Jump over to her blog and see her Hiccup Costume too! We love listening to these books while we drive home to California. And she totally nailed it with these costumes!
Again, another we have a costume that would work for a boy or girl. Dana’s Lucy makes an adorable Sam-I-Am. But we couldn’t leave out a Dr. Seuss character during our Reading Across America Week celebration. My favorite part about these costumes is the plate with Green Eggs and Ham. Check out her blog and the fun videos she puts together.
Another great blog to check out. (I love following her on Instagram too) If you click over you can see their whole family dressed up. I love when families dress up together. This costume is perfect for book week. Such a classic book.
How could we have a list that didn’t include a Harry Potter Character. This tutorial for a Dobby costume is really cute and it’s a no sew tutorial. Dobby is my 5 year olds favorite character in Harry Potter. Of course you could use my Hogwarts Robe Tutorial and make your son a Harry, Ron, Colin, Cedric, or Draco costume. (Check out my son as Draco here…)
Curious George & The Man with the Yellow Hat
How adorable is this??? Another great classic for the win. Be sure to check out Merrick’s blog. She is my favorite fashion blogger! (And I think she is having a sale on her Modern Girls sewing course that you are going to want to check out) Her little man and monkey are pretty adorable!
This is the third great costume from The House That Lars Built (If we are counting yesterdays post too) But how could I not include it. The costume is so simple, but so creative! I love reading this book. It’s hard to not cry when I do. And my young women gave me a copy that they had written in notes for me that is especially dear to my heart. Love this costume idea!
My son is a big fan of Gandalf. Only after I made this costume he told me he wanted to be Gandalf the White. He’s also my only kid would has read Lord of the Rings. But I know dressing up like characters will help my other three kids want to read them someday too!
